Intel has announced the launch of its Silicon Photonics PSM4, a new communications module that reaches a whopping figure of 100 Gbps transfer rate at distances up to 2 km.
This technology is aimed at large data centers or server rooms where the transfer rate for these distances is critical. The technology has been in development over 16 years and is now when Intel shows a functional end module. Silicon Photonics uses a laser beam to align the optical transfer giving greater accuracy and increasing speed while decreasing costs.

The first major company to adopt this technology is Microsoft, which has found its Azure datacenters ideal to enhance a data center where data traffic is doubling every year environment.
