Sometimes market dynamics may surprise us, but history teaches us that two competing companies can join together to grow together, creating a virtuous circle which would bring benefits (economic, strategic and commercial) for both.
It ‘a little’ what is occurring between Qualcomm and Allwinner, two ARM-based chip makers mainly used in Android tablet. The alliance between the two chip maker dates back to last year when, to my surprise, they decided to work together despite being interested in the same market share. In fact, Qualcomm and Allwinner are two “excellence” in the same industry but in different areas: the first dominates the US and Europe, while the other is more popular in China, where it competes with Rockchip and MediaTek.
Qualcomm and Allwinner together to conquer China
The agreement, therefore, had the sole purpose of increasing the presence of Qualcomm in the Chinese market, helped by Allwinner, that while he had the chance to offer tablet makers also chip with integrated support for 4G / LTE. At the MWC 2016 in Shanghai, then, the partnership extends and is always Allwinner who takes the initiative: the Chinese chip maker unveiled three new reference design for tablets with Qualcomm chips, thus encouraging even more the work of producers.
The reference design is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chip, 430 and 435, practically mid-low-end models, but all have a 4G / LTE integrated modem and support for full HD display devices (1080p). These reference designs will be added to the existing ones, equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC 210, 212, and 410, already adopted by some Chinese manufacturers of tablets like Cube and Emdoor
