Samsung SSD 960 Pro and Samsung SSD 960 Evo



The 2016 edition of the Samsung SSD Global Summit, world conference dedicated to innovation in the field of NAND Flash and solid discs of Korean multinational state, has seen two protagonists new series of SSD NVMe: Samsung SSD 960 Pro high-performance and high capability, and Samsung SSD 960 Evo, a budget variant but with exceptional top speed.
The main features are the same as NVMe Samsung SSD 950 Pro, already available on the market since last year: V-vertical NAND module to reduce the footprint and allow to achieve high density storage at low cost, NVMe interface (Non-Volatile Memory Express) which allows to overcome the bottleneck dell’accoppiata-SATA AHCI and proprietary software appreciated Samsung Magician, constantly updated and improved, a component often overlooked but that alone is an invaluable competitive advantage.

These same qualities had enabled the Samsung SSD 950 Pro to achieve outstanding performance, absolutely unattainable with SATA3 SSD: 2500MB / s in sequential read and 1500MB / s sequential write, 300,000 IOPS and 110,000 IOPS random read and write. A record that is broken today by the new Samsung SSD 960 Pro with a leap forward by an average of 40%: the performance (measured by the benchmark of CrystalDiskMark 5.0.2 and 1.1.0 IOmeter sector) in reading and writing sequential rise to 3,500 MB / s and 2,100 MB / s and random read and write you even get to 440,000 IOPS and 360,000 IOPS. The Samsung SSD 960 Evo are placed immediately behind with a peak of 3,200 MB / s and 1,900 MB / s read and sequential write and 380,000 IOPS and 360,000 IOPS for random read and write.

Considering that the SSD and HDD of our computers are engaged mainly in random operations, it is clear that the Samsung 960 Series drive will be able to turn an ordinary notebook, desktop, or tablet in snappy racing machines.

To ensure the turbo effect is the new controller Samsung Polaris 5 core pension offering the old controller Samsung UBX 3 core. In addition to allow Samsung 960 Pro to reach the capacity of 2TB, currently the highest in its category, is a package-on-package technique was used to place the DRAM memory directly on-die controller, freeing space for 4 NAND package . The format is in fact for all that compact only 8x2cm (approximately) of the 2280 single-sided drive M.2 with PCIe 3.0 x4 interface.
But increase the performance also means increased fuel consumption and the heat produced. To avert the risk all’innalzarsi temperature, Samsung uses a technology called Dynamic Thermal Guard that on SSD 950 Pro forcing throttling after 63 seconds of sequential reading. The thermal throttling substantially reduces performance to level the temperatures and thus adversely affects the SSD speed, but Samsung still managed to raise the threshold of intervention of the Dynamic Thermal Guard technology on the new drive series 960 Evo and Pro, respectively 79/2 and 95 seconds.
This result was achieved by optimizing the energy efficiency of SSDs in the complex but also through a trick borrowed from the world of smartphones and tablet: a thermal label on the underside of the SSD and composed of several layers of different materials including also one copper layer which acts as a heat sink.
But it must be remembered that the Samsung Polaris controller had already debuted in early 2016 on the OEM SSD PM961 and SM961 and therefore does not constitute a real innovation. It is rather unusual pairing of this controller with the V-NAND modules with vertical development in the Samsung to 48 layers version capable of storing 256GB of data on a single die and 256GB on each package. While the Samsung SSD 960 Pro rely on more reliable forms V-NAND MLC storing 2 bits per cell, the Samsung SSD 960 Evo fall back on cheaper forms V-NAND TLC (Triple-Level Cell, 3 bits per cell) flanked by a portion of memory used in SLC mode with a device already used in the past by the Korean house to increase the durability and performance in sequential write.
Samsung calls this buffer SLC with TurboWrite trade name, but has now been improved and made more smart and renamed Intelligent TurboWrite. Unfortunately for the Samsung moment has not explained what has actually perfected this technology; we only know that the buffer capacity increased significantly going up to 13GB, 22GB and 42GB respectively for SSDs with cut of 250GB, 500GB and 1TB.

The Samsung SSD 960 Pro drives instead do not need technology Intelligent TurboWrite because they are already using V-NAND MLC memories, faster and more durable, and therefore provide more stable performance, which are not affected by the conditioning of an intermediate buffer.
The last piece of the puzzle is the owner Samsung Magician software, which has always been an indispensable equipment of solid state drives Samsung, but that at the launch of the SSD 960 series is updated with a new user interface and new features. There is a feature developed for “Secure Erase” or secure erase, which does not rely only to the TRIM command, but to a set of proprietary command that go immediately to remove certain blocks of memory. The “Magic Vault” instead allows users to create a portion of the drive “armored” accessible only by password. The files and the data contained in this “safe” are protected against viruses and against theft.
The Samsung SSD 960 PRO will be available in denominations of 512GB, 1TB and 2TB, with a limited warranty of five years and with a claimed life of up to 1.2 petabytes (2TB version), while the Samsung 960 EVO will have capacities of 250GB, 500GB and 1TB, limited three-year warranty and lifetime up to 400 petabytes of data written for cutting 1TB. The Samsung’s warranty does not cover the costs and expenses related to the review, editing, and retrieving data for the repair or replacement of the SSD.
The arrival on the Italian market is scheduled to begin in November but we have not yet official information about the list prices.
