Recently, we took care of EliteBook Folio, one of the first HP attempts to create a small laptop 12.5 inches dedicated to the professionals, but EliteBook 1040 G3 is a more balanced car. It ‘s always an ultra-thin (15.6 mm), but oriented user productivity with a good set of interfaces and higher performance processors. We had the chance to try one at CES 2016, and we have to admit that the notebook combines portability and power, in a pleasing design.
How does the name suggests, HP EliteBook 1040 G3 is the successor dell’EliteBook Folio 1040 G2, then the aesthetic connotations of the elegant aluminum frame are almost identical with one small difference: the touch pad, which remains the same size, is rounded the bottom of which hides the new arrangements for the left / right buttons, for better feedback. We also like the portability: 1.3 Kg like other high-end notebooks like the Lenovo Yoga 900 and Toshiba Satellite Radius 12, but despite the small dimensions offers several interfaces, including a USB-C, HDMI, two USB 3.0 ports, an SD card reader and even a SIM slot for 4G LTE connectivity. Another advantage is the fingerprint reader (optional), which seems to take the same fast, reliable and discreet than integrated into Elite x2 1011 G1. It works in tandem with the HP Client Security software, protecting data stored with biometric encryption.
Despite the short time available with the EliteBook 1040 G3, we were able to take a look at its performance. The unit on display blended a dual-core Intel Core i5-6300U vPro 2.4GHz with 8GB DDR4 RAM, and the “quality” of certain components is recognized in speed and responsiveness in multitasking generation. but they will also support other Intel chips Skylake up to Core i7-6600U vPro and 16GB of RAM. Storage instead is equal to 128GB on SSD M.2 SATA TLC, but also in this case should be provided a cutting 256GB.
HP EliteBook 1040 G3 incorporates a 14-inch display Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels, 156PPI) with anti-glare treatment, which in some situations creates an annoying “grainy” effect. It seems that HP will make available a version with QHD display touch, but in a classic laptop (clamshell and non-convertible) if the increase in pixels is always appreciated, the touch sensitivity is less useful and could affect the duration of autonomy . The audio is provided by Bang & Olufsen with a range of software products from this company to further improve performance in the reproduction of music, while the webcam has a resolution of 720p.
The installed operating system is Windows 10 Pro, but HP also makes it possible to downgrade to Windows 7 Professional or Windows 8.1 Pro if you have compatibility problems with certain professional software. HP EliteBook 1040 G3 is already available in USA, in the configuration described here, priced at $ 1,299. It should be on sale in Europe (and therefore also in Italy) from March to the base price of 899 Euros
